Gregory Henry, D.O.,
Occupational Medicine physician with the Hannibal Regional Medical Group is a certified Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). He performs flight physicals and issues Class II and Class III medical certificates for civilian pilots. The medical certificate is evidence that the pilot has met the medical standards for aircraft operation. AMEs are physicians designated and trained by the FAA to screen individuals for fitness to perform aviation duties.
Flying has the potential for serious consequences if not done properly and carefully. Just like the annual inspections performed on all aircraft to assure that they meet minimum safety standards, pilots must pass routine periodic medical examinations known informally as "flight physicals" in order to retain the medical clearance or certification that qualifies them to fly.
The goal of the flight physical is to ensure that the pilot is healthy and physically able to safely pilot an aircraft without being a danger to him or herself or to their passengers and to assure the public that the individual in the pilot’s seat is fit to be there.
